From November 14 to December 30, 2025, we will be opening the doors of the Velvet Cave Christmas Market in Valkenburg for the 26th time.
Experience the most atmospheric indoor Christmas event in the Netherlands,
which has been attracting visitors from home and abroad for years.
Stroll through the centuries-old underground passages, filled with lights and a
warm Christmas atmosphere. Wander past attractively lit stalls with Christmas
decorations, delicious treats, and gifts ranging from small keepsakes to luxury
presents.

The Fluweelengrot Christmas market is accessible to everyone. Are you coming with a wheelchair, mobility scooter, or walker? That’s no problem at all!
Please note: unfortunately, pets are not allowed!
A piece of history
The Velvet Cave is a centuries-old network of tunnels that was originally created for marl extraction. What makes it special is that the cave is connected to the Valkenburg Castle Ruins through old escape tunnels. This allows you to feel the historical connection between the underground world and the impressive ruins above the city.
Discover the cave and ruins all year round
Outside the Christmas period, the Velvet Cave and the castle ruins can be visited all year round. During a guided tour of the cave, an enthusiastic guide will tell you stories about the history, legends, and secrets of the underground passages.
